Buccoadhesive tablets for the treatment of aphtha were prepared by mixing prednisolone with various amounts of different polymers. The adhesion of each formulation was measured as well as the release of the drug from buccoadhesive tablets. The increasing concentrations of Polycarbophil (PCP) and Carbopol 934p (CP) caused higher adhesive properties of the prepared formulations. However, adhesion force did not change upon increasing the concentration of sodium carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) in the formulations. Increasing of hydroxypropylmethyl cellulose (SCMC) concentration in the formulations containing CP and PCP caused a downward shift in viscosities. However, the viscosity of the formulation fabricated with CMC was not affected by HPMC concentration. Buccoadhesive tablets containing a combination of 5% CP, 10% PCP and 10% HPMC demonstrated a pronounced and significant sigmoidal release after a logical lag time.
