Biologically active Mannich bases with nitro substituted aromatic ring system have been synthesized by Mannich reaction of substituted dinitrobenzamide with various sulfonamides. They were characterized by elemental analysis, UV, IR and 1H NMR studies, and screened for toxicity and antibacterial activity against various pathogenic bacteria at varying concentrations. The compounds showed strong antibacterial activity and were found to be markedly superior to corresponding sulfonamides. All the compounds were found to be of low toxicity as ascertained by LD50 test.
