The FAME is site devoted to systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author support or approve the ideas they may stand for. |

A new coat of arms was adopted in 1999, quite soon after the previous one, divided per pale in dark blue and dark red (bordeaux), with nine eight-pointed golden stars representing the communities of the canton, and a white rosette combining the ornament from the Sarajevo cathedral, and the door-knocker from an oriental house called Svrzina kuća. The flag is still white with, now, the new coat of arms in the middle. Vertical version is also prescribed.

The nine triangles symbolize the nine communities in the canton, and are adapted from similar roof representations in the coat of arms of the city of Sarajevo. The bridge is taken from the Sarajevo coat of arms also, and the symbol at the base is the sign of Sarajevo 1984 Winter Olypmic Games (minus Olympic rings), representing a snowflake. Some other proposals for this flag included all blue field, then only blue vertical edges, and blue all-around border.
