The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |
This site is harvested for the NSK digital archives. |

Dubrovnik and Neretva County
Dubrovačko-neretvanska županija
Legal notice: The counties, cities and communities in the Republic of Croatia by their decision on adoption and use of the coats of arms and flags limit the use of these symbols only after obtaining an explicit written permission. However, most of the units of local government and self-government by the same decisions explicitly allow the free use of the symbols in the educational and scientific purposes and in the artistic creation, under condition that such use does not offend the dignity and honour of the local unit. The author of these pages considers that the depiction of the coats of arms and the flags here meets the conditions of free use in that sense.

Design: coat of arms and flag: Francesca Danese-Katić, architect from Korčula; ceremonial flag: Mladen Šlezak and prof. Siniša Reberski from Zagreb
The arms include the ancient arms of Dubrovnik (barry gules and argent) dating from XI century. Four white bars now represent three rivers of the Dubrovnik region and the Neretva river. Neretvan valley is represented with a 'trupica', traditional vessel used by population of Neretvan delta. The arms of the island of Korčula in third quarter represent city towers of Korčula, their firmness and strength. When on the flag, it is outlined golden, which is said to stand for rich history of the region. The flag is red over white bicolour with the coat of arms in the centre.
The ceremonial flag was manufactured in 1996. It is a gonfalon with three tails in the fly, divided into red over white with the coat of arms within a heraldic floral mantle of azure and argent. The year of the formation of the county 1992 is inscribed above in white numerals and the name of the county below in red letters and the flag is bordered in gold, fringed along the bottom and with three tassels.
In 2002 there was also a ceremonial ecclesiastic flag of the County introduced, picturing the parton of the County, St. Leopold Bogan Mandić, that is used during the religious ceremonies.
