Lika and Senj County
Ličko-senjska županija
Legal notice: The counties, cities and communities in the Republic of Croatia by their decision on adoption and use of the coats of arms and flags limit the use of these symbols only after obtaining an explicit written permission. However, most of the units of local government and self-government by the same decisions explicitly allow the free use of the symbols in the educational and scientific purposes and in the artistic creation, under condition that such use does not offend the dignity and honour of the local unit. The author of these pages considers that the depiction of the coats of arms and the flags here meets the conditions of free use in that sense.

The coat of arms is blue with golden degenia flower. The flag is white with two blue stripes, one at each upper and lower edge, each being 1/7 of the flag width wide, with the coat of arms in the centre of it. The ceremonial flag (gonfalon) is also described in the decision as dark blue, 160x80 cm, with golden fringe, and tails and lower edge. In the middle is the coat of arms, and in the tails golden branches of olive, oak and vine.
The County choose for her symbol the flower of Degenia Velebitica, an endemic plant growing on Velebit. That is not surprising, regarding that beside Velebit park, there is in this County also the National park of Plitvice Lakes, and several other protected areas and natural fenomenons of interest. The olive, oak and vine in the gonfalon are symbols of wellfare and fertility, of power and wisdom, and of life and imortality. (The gonfalon image here reconstructed from the description.)

Until 2000 the ceremonial flag formally included the inscription of the old (pre-1997) official name of the county. It is not confirmed that such flag was ever produced.

Two designs were reportedy in use in mid 1990's. Both are probably the proposals that were hoisted in the county assembly.
