Krapina and Zagorje County
Krapinsko-zagorska županija
Legal notice: The counties, cities and communities in the Republic of Croatia by their decision on adoption and use of the coats of arms and flags limit the use of these symbols only after obtaining an explicit written permission. However, most of the units of local government and self-government by the same decisions explicitly allow the free use of the symbols in the educational and scientific purposes and in the artistic creation, under condition that such use does not offend the dignity and honour of the local unit. The author of these pages considers that the depiction of the coats of arms and the flags here meets the conditions of free use in that sense.

The coat of arms is vertically divided in red and golden, counterchanged with an embattled wall and three six-pointed stars in chief.
The flag is dark red with thin yellow stripe along both upper and lower edge, 1/10 of the flag width wide each, and with the golden bordered coat of arms in the middle.
The ceremonial flag is prescribed as vertically hoisted dark red gonfalon with the coat of arms with the name of the county in an arch above. Below the coat of arms is a tripple wattle. The table flags are made according to that pattern, too.

The ceremonial flag was planned to be a vertically hoisted red gonfalon with the coat of arms within a lime and a vine branch and with the name of the county in arch above. However, this was not adopted in the end. Having no contradictory information I have published this design, that we know now is errorneous, in several publications.

The 1997 decision changes the design of the coat of arms, replacing the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia in it, with "the historic coat of arms of the Republic [sic!] of Croatia from 1495", probably meaning the one preserved on the magistrate of Insbruck, consisting of 4x4 cheques crowned with a golden crown. Possibly this flag was never produced.

The coat of arms consists of the coat of arms of the city of Krapina, crowned with the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia, under the heraldic mantle. The daisies (ivančica in Croatian) in the base of the mantle are canting for the Ivančica Hill dominating the County. Even if the design was refused by the Ministry of Administration, the flag was much used in official circumstances, the vertical ceremonial version with rectangular indentations at the bottom and the fringe was prescribed. The horizontal flag reported in use as well. The horizontal flag was produced also without the blue ribbon with inscription. The inscription might have been changed at some time in 1997 by some general decision setting the word 'županija' at the end.
