The FAME is a site devoted to the systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author supports or approves of the ideas they may stand for. |
This site is harvested for the NSK digital archives. |

The regulations on the local flags in Croatia require that a flag of a city or community be of a field of one colour with the coat of arms in the middle or offset towards hoist. Some exceptions from this rule are tolerated for the cities with traditional flag established before these rules were made, while some cities choose to ignore the regulations and use a flag of their liking. It may be that in time the latter exceptions would be replaced.
Legal notice: The counties, cities and communities in the Republic of Croatia by their decision on adoption and use of the coats of arms and flags limit the use of these symbols only after obtaining an explicit written permission. However, most of the units of local government and self-government by the same decisions explicitly allow the free use of the symbols in the educational and scientific purposes and in the artistic creation, under condition that such use does not offend the dignity and honour of the local unit. The author of these pages considers that the depiction of the coats of arms and the flags here meets the conditions of free use in that sense.

Slavonski Brod (until 1934. known as Brod na Savi) was granted coat of arms in late XVIII or early XIX century, certainly before 1820, which was basically the same as the one used today. On the shield Azure above the wavy bar Argent a heron holding a fish in the beak and a rotulus (scroll) in dexter leg all Or, and in the chief dexter a crescent Argent and sinister five six-pointed stars (3:2) Or. The name of the city could be inscribed in an arch under the shield arched along the lower edge. The flag is white with the coat of arms in the middle. The ceremonial flag of the city is of equal design but made in more precious materials. The flag for vertical hoisting on a mast is prescribed a longer ratio - 1:3.

The design adopted in 1994 differed in minor details - the wavy bar was light blue, the crescent was also golden and the flags were designed for vertical hoisting, with the coat of arms set in the upper part. The previous 1992 decision might have already adopted the same symbols.

The coat of arms of Nova Gradiška is azure a church between two houses with arcades issunat from the flanks all or and a bar argent in the base. It is the Church of St. Therese, built in baroque style since 1754, the first stone structure built in the young town until four years earlier known as Friedrichsdorf (after colonel Friedrich Schmidt, commander of the Gradiška regiment). The single stripe in the base represents the river Sava. The flag is light blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the middle.

A mounth prior to the final adoption of the current symbols, the city adopted amendments to the earlier 1995 decision, much simplifying the design of the coat of arms, removing thre green hills and the bunch of grapes, but retaining the wavy line, now white in the blue base. The yellow edges were removed from the flag design. The when the Ministry approved the version with straight line, a correction to the the decision was simply issued, introducing the current design.

After a public contest for the design of the coat of arms and the flag in the second half of 1993, which apparently did not yeald results, the city invited some designers to a closed contest in mid-1994. In about a year the decision on the city symbols was adopted, introducing the coat of arms showing the Church of St. Therese between the buildings, infront of green hills and with a blue wavy line in the green base over which was set a blue bunch of grapes with yellow leaves. The flag was adopted to be light blue with the coat of arms bordered yellow in the centre of it and with thing yellow border along the outer edges.
