[The FAME - Flag and Arms of the Modern Era]

The FAME is site devoted to systematic and scientific study of flags and coats of arms. Such symbols often bear strong political and other messages. Inclusion of those symbols here does not mean that the author support or approve the ideas they may stand for.

Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes, 1922 - 1929


The flags for use in the Navy were adopted in 1922. A new regulations were adopted in 1937, though there might have been some additional regulations inbetween.

The naval ensign is the national tricolour with the coat of arms off-set to hoist. he vertical axis of the coat of arms is at the one third of the flag length. The height of the coat of arms and excluding the royal orb at the top of the corwn is one helf of the flag width.



Merchant Ensign

The merchant ensign is simply the national tricolur pof blue over white over red.



Reserve Naval Officer Ensign

The ensign that could have been warranted to the ships commanded by captains who are reserve naval officers and meeting certain criteria is the national tricolour defaced in the blue stripe next to the hoist with a white cabled anchor topped with the yellow royal crown. In the letter sources the defacement is all yellow, changed maybe to simplify the production.

The ensign hoisted by ships of the harbour police is the national tricolour with two blue anchors crossed in saltire set in the middle of the white stripe.



Minister of Army and Navy

The Minister of Army and Navy standard is a square tricolour bordred with tricolour bars and with the coat of arms (without the shield behind it) in the canton.



Rear Admiral

The flag of rear admiral is a blue square flag with the tricolour bars border and the royal crown in full colours in the second quarter. The law of 1922 defines only this admiral rank flag, while the latter sources give the crown in canton and include higher admiral ranks. The other admiral rank flags must have been added as the navy grew, before 1937, when different flags were introduced.

The commodore penannt is trangular split blue pennant with the crown in canton. The width ofthe pennant at fly is one third of the width at hoist and the indentation reaches the half of the length. The crown quarter of the pennant width long is set in the middle of the canton square half the hoist high.

The masthead pennant is a long white pennant from the middle to fly convergaining to a point and ending with a white tassel. The first third of the length it is in the national tricoluur colours.

The customs service vessels hoisted a triangular signal of blue-white-red stripes convergeting to the fly.

Ships that carried mail were to hoist a signal on signal mast being a square tricolour with the midde stripe wider in which was a blue posthorn.

The flag of a Vice-Admiral is of the same design as the admiral's flag, but on a red field.

The flag of a Rear Admiral is of the same design as the admiral's flag, but on a blue field. The 1922 Law prescribed the crown in the second quarter (not even mentioning the flags for the two higher admirals), but all latter sources show the crown in the canton.
