F. Vodopivec, B. Arzenšek, J. Vojvodič Tuma, R. Celin - The Charpy fracturing process in ductile range

The fracturing of structural steels in Charpy ductile range is investigated. The dependences load versus deflection and time were recorded and the consumption of energy for different fracturing events, as f.i. plastic deflection and crack propagation was assessed. The micromorphology of the crack surface and lips is examined and the succesions of decohesion mechanims is deduced. The aproximate change of fracturing temperature due to adiabatic dissipation of deformation energy as heat is deduced, also.

S. Dobatkin, J. Zrnik, I. Mamuzić - Ultrafine-grained low carbon steels by severe plastic deformation

The structure and properties of 0,14% C and 0,1% C - B low-carbon steels taken in two initial states, martensitic and ferritic-pearlitic, were studied after cold equal-channel angular (ECA) pressing. ECA pressing leads to the formation of only partially submicrocrystalline structure with a grain size of 150 – 300 nm, depending on the steel alloying and initial state. The finest structure with the elements of 190 nm in size is obtained in the 0,1% C - B steel microalloyed with boron. The strength of the 0,1% C - B steel after cold ECA pressing (Rm = 805-1235 MPa) meets the specifications of fasteners of the R80 - R120 strength grade. The strength of the deformed 0,14% C steel is close to the R80 strength grade.

The paper deals with structure and properties development of AHSS (advance high-strength steel) and UHSS (ultra high-strength steel) steel grades for various groups of automotive parts. C-Mn-Si type steel properties are evaluated based on the results of laboratory controlled rolling and cooling. The important influence on mechanical and plastic properties, amount of residual austenite (RA) and final structural type has, except for cooling rate, also starting temperature of intensive cooling (TIC) which follows after hot plastic deformations. If TIC is from interval of 620-760°C the final structure predominantly consists of ferrite with RA. Mostly acicular ferrite with RA, as well as bainite with RA was obtained when TIC was kept in the range of 760-850°C.

F. Chowaniec - Quality improvement of continuously cast round billets

Paper is focused on the observation of the conditions causing defects origin in continuously cast billets in the first phase of solidification and shell formation in the mould. Work is also focused on the area of casting failures. Experiences were aimed at steel preparation for casting from the viewpoint of desoxidation and modification of inclusions, facility influence on solidification and formation of shell, influence of the taper of the mould, and on vibrations influence and origin within primary cooling system – oscillation mechanism – mould. The method of measurement was tested, incl. the analysis of acoustic spectrum for phenomena assessment within continuous casting. Conclusions resulted in modification and changes of shapes of moulds, incl. casting technology of round billets.

R. Kawalla, M. Oswald, C. Schmidt, M. Ullmann, H.-P. Vogt, N. D. Cuong - New technology for the production of magnesium strips and sheets

A new production technology for magnesium strip, based on twin-roll-casting and strip rolling was developed in Freiberg Germany. By means of this economic method it is possible to produce strips in deep drawing quality with good forming properties in order to satisfy the request for low cost Mg sheets in the automotive and electronic industry. Both, coils as single sheets, were manufactured and rolled to a thickness of 1mm(0,5 mm). The technology of the new process and the properties of the twin-roll-casted material and the final sheets are presented.

K. Gawdzinska, J. Grabian, W. Przetakiewicz - Use of X-ray radiography in finding defects in metal-matrix composite casts

The aim of the carried out studies was to establish in what degree X-ray radiography is useful for finding defects in metal-matrix composite materials. These materials have various defects due to their specific composition. Especially when we take composites produced with casting methods into consideration. An effort to establish a degree of the influence of the phenomenon of electromagnetic diffusion on the boundary of matrix/ reinforcement phases was made in the results analysis of the studies.

M. Mihalikova, Š. Gazdag - Application of the video-extensometry for the comparison of the plastic deformation welded sheets

This paper presents the results obtained from the experimental study conducted in relation with the research focused to the plastic deformation development and its localisation during the static tensile test and test of the notch toughness on the welded steel sheets. The aim of experiments was to determine the possibilities of obtaining the data for the estimation of the welds toughness applying the video-extensometry scanning of the deformation distribution, to estimate deformations within the individual sections of the weld and to compare them with the notch toughness. Based of the results obtained it can qunatitied the relation between the strain and toughness of thich sheets.

E. Tillová, M. Panušková - Effect of solution treatment on intermetallic phases morphology in AlSi9Cu3 cast alloy

In the present work was investigated the influence of solution treatment by 505°C, 515°C and 525°C±2°C with different holding times 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 hours on microstructural elements of commercial AlSi9Cu3 cast alloy. During this heat treatment was observed the spheroidization of eutectic Si, gradual disintegration of iron rich intermetallic phases on base Al(FeMnMg)Si, shortening and thinning of Al5FeSi iron needles and the dissolving of Al-Al2Cu-Si intermetallic phase by temperature 525°C.

I. Mamuzić - The Fiftyfifth Anniversary of the Foundation of Croatian Metallurgical Society (CMS) 1952 – 2007

The goal of this article is to give an overview of the foundation and development of Croatian Metallurgical Society (CMS) from the Society of Engineers and Technicians of Željezara Sisak 1952. – 2007. With monitoring of the condition of Croatian Metallurgy, goals and tasks of CMS, the main activities of the Society are also set out: publishing of the magazine Metalurgija, international symposiums “Materials and Metallurgy”, and productive cooperation with an array of institutions in Croatia and abroad. The data were also given that the total production in Croatia in 1990 was 2,500,000 tons of various metallurgical products (without cast iron products), and only 230,000 t in 2007, i.e. at the level below 10%. The overview includes also several futile press notices to the public made by the members of the Society of their own initiative, in order to sustain and revitalize the Croatian metallurgy.

J. Zrnik, S. V. Dobatkin, I. Mamuzić - Processing of metals by severe plastic deformation (SPD) – structure and mechanical properties respond

SPD methods are used to convert coarse grain metals and alloys into ultrafine grained (UFG) materials. Obtained UFG materials then possess improved mechanical and physical properties which destine them for a wide commercial use. This paper, in one direction, looks into historical development of SPD processes and their effect at obtaining fine crystalline structure, and on the other side also partially focuses on development of UFG structure and its stability in commercial pure aluminium as a function of strain and post-deformation annealing applied.
