Island Hvar
Is the longest island in the Adriatic
sea . It is 77 km. long from Sućuraj (south) to Vira north-west.
Vrboska
Town is situated in a long and deep and
narrow bay, so that when you walk along the riva the impression
is that you are on one of the Venice canal. Vrboska originates
from 15th cent. When villagers from continental Vrbanj have
started to inhabit seaside location. Renaissance church
of St. Mary was built in 15th century.
It has been converted into a fort in 1580. and the layout
and architectural solutions are such that it is considered
one of important monuments of the world architectural heritage.
There are valuable works of art in the church At the beginning
of 16th cent. Another church has been built in Vrboska.
Trobrodna church of St. Lovro. In it you will be able to
see 5 gold plated marble portals as well as important artworks
of local and Venetian artists and craftsman.
Jelsa
Town and port are situated in a beautiful
bay. Jelsa has been founded by fishermen in 15th cent. Apart
from fishing there is important agriculture activities.
Parish church of St. Fabio and Sebastian dated from 14th
cent. It was competed in 16th cent. Main Square is from
baroque times as it is baroque Church of St. Ivan. There
are a number of interesting baroque villas owned in the
past by wealthy families from Jelsa.
Starigrad
Originally dates from ancient Greek times
i.e. 4th century. It's name was Pharos. Later the whole
island got the name Hvar. Roman-gothic church St.Ivan from
1332. was built alongside antique walls. Worth visiting
is renaissance church of St. Rocco as well as parish church
of St. Stephan from a year 1605 with and valuable inventory
- works of art. Alongside the church is Dominican monastery
later converted into a fort. Here is a grave of one of the
most famous poet and personality of Croatian heritage Petar
Hektorović.
In the old part of town there a many interesting and beautiful
buildings from patrician times when many wealthy families
lived in Starigrad.
Famous building is Tvrdalj from 16th cent. Castle and fort
at the same time with attractive garden and fish pond owned
by Petar Hektorovic's family.
