The tourist office of Novi Vinodolski has it's own web site with a description of six treks, together with and interesting brochure with all the details etc. We have chosen one with the most to offer, trek no. six or "trek with the view" as they call it because of a beautiful scenery, mountains, sea, islands etc. In a few hours ride you have a chance to experience both worlds - Mediterranean and mountain.
The rest of the treks can be seen on their site http://www.tz-novi-vinodolski.hr/biciklisticke-staze.html
0 km - 17 km Novi Vinodloski -
Breze
The starting point is in the centre of
Novi Vinodolski right from the main quay (next to the petrol
station). From there, you should make for the road to Split,
i.e.few hundred meters from the start towards the town (North)
and than right. After another few hundred meters and passing
the Tourist office on the right road splits in two. The
right fork takes you to Split and the left towards Breze.
It's signposted - Bater, Breze.
Immediately you will have a feeling of it being a local
road as the traffic is suddenly scarcer. At about one km.
it starts steeper climb and the road snakes ahead of you.
Already after only a few bands there is view of the bay
and islands… the whole coast and villages in the Vinodol
area.
After a few more kilometres you will reach vast rubbish
dump (it's not too bad!) and than another, narrower road
on the left to Bribir. Stay on the "main" road
and continue climbing towards Bater and than Breze. The
higher you go the more attractive the scenery gets until
you reach the gorge. It acts as a border between the Mediterranean
and the mountain scenery and climate as well. Towards the
south is the Adriatic and to the east the Velebit Mountains
with peaks reaching 1000 - 1500 m/asl.
After 12 km you'll arrive at Bater. A wooden sign with bicycle
drawn on it shouldn't confuse you. It is an old sign showing
a trek in the opposite direction. You should ignore these
signs except the ones in colour. Trek no. six is marked
as yellow, but in a number of places you should be careful
and consult our instructions (These signs can be destroyed
by the "activities" of local forest workers.)
On the 17th km. You arrive in Breze, a small place with
only a few houses. On the right is a local bar and restaurant
frequented mostly by workers from the old saw mill, just
across the road. (We recommend you to stop and visit the
mill.) The Bar/Restaurant is called "K Bijelome Konju"
(White Horse). You can have a drink here but meals have
to be ordered in advance (051 793 802).
17 km - 28 km Breze - Luka Krmpotska
(Krmpote)
After a rest in Breze, the road climbs
for another few km and after a total of 20,2 km. turn right
to the woods (the turn is marked with a wooden plate with
several colours - follow the yellow colour.)
You are now on a narrower road and after a little more climbing
you reach 1000 m/asl.
Soon asphalt road turns to gravel and it starts to descent.
This is the highest point of the trip. From now on its downhill
all the way (except for a few flat segments.)
After another few km. forest gives way to open spaces with
completely new scenery. On the right you can see the road
that you took 20 min. ago and ahead of you is the sea and
the island of Krk as well as the other islands. If you continued
eastwards the road would take you right to the Velebit Mountains.
Velebit is always in sight and you should plan to visit
this mountain in the near future as well. Pass under long
distance electricity cables and for some time the road is
flat, it takes you through forest and than it starts descending
again. On 23rd km. the forest gives way, once again, to
wide-open spaces. You haven't descended much. You are still
at 900 m/asl. On 26th km. there is a turning onto a wide
gravel road that goes uphill. Do not take it, but stay on
the "main" road (sign), which goes down. You will
arrive soon to at a miniature underpass and descending the
narrow road will take you to a house. The first one on the
descent from Breze. (On the map you might see that more
houses are marked, but locals tell me that most houses in
this area are deserted and sometimes hidden among plants
that grow densely around the walls). Soon you'll find yourself
in Luka and gravel road turns into a narrow asphalt road
again.
28 km - 37 km Luka Krmpotska -
Bater
After few hundred meters you'll arrive
at a small village. Be careful here not to miss the road
as there are several roads and paths. Take the road that
passes along stony wall in a generally straight direction.
After 500 met. There is large stone-built house that is
the gathering place of a local hunters club. It is a very
good restaurant as well, with wild game cuisine. Among locals
its name is "Zvonko"
If you decide not to taste the food continue straight to
the crossroad. When you arrive there about 50 met. in front,
on your left left you'll see a monument (700 m/asl) turn
right here and you will find yourself on a good asphalt
road that is descending towards the sea.
So far we haven't seen any cars and only few people in spite
of the high season (July), therefore this sortie is ideal
for bikers who like a lonely ride while on their summer
holidays.
Once on the asphalt road again there is a panoramic view
of sea islands, mountains. And you will understand why this
is called "scenic trek".The Road is descending
quite steeply and as there is no traffic and asphalt gives
a good surface you will be able to reach quite high speeds.
Even 80 km/h. for the daring. After a fast ride there is
a right turn to Podmelnik (again the bikers sign marked
with yellow flash) (560 m/asl) now you are joining a much
narrower road/trek but still a tarmac one.
On a 32.5 km there is sharp uphill stretch only about 50
met long and this time the view is on a Vinodol town your
final destination as our general direction is Westward.
After reaching a big sign "Dresnik 1.4 km" continue
straight ahead but be careful not to miss the right turn
to a narrow gravel trek that will take you to Bater. At
36 km. gravel gives way once again to narrow tarmac. After
a while turn left, where the track splits (do not turn right)
and after 1 km you are in Bater. After "a lonely"
ride this small agricultural village seems full of activity.
Stone houses with stables, cows, donkeys small plots with
vegetables all very picturesque and peaceful.
37 km - 49 km Bater - Novi Vinodloski
Towards the exit from the village be
careful to take a right sharp uphill. This may look illogical
but this road will soon (after few turns) bring you to the
main road to Vinodol (the same road we took on our way to
Breze.) That is almost the end of the trip and all that
is left is to enjoy is a fast descent and some of the scenery
you were not able to see properly while climbing to Breze.
Successful day's biking ends on a quay in Novi Vinodolski
after 49 km.
